At a life drawing class our model was a female bodybuilder, Loredana, who ranked 4th in the world. The definition in muscles, tendons and bones made shading fascinating. Later in the studio is where the experiment with paste mediums came in, not a success, yet. It is an exciting concept with all original art priced at $60, $120 , or $240. Why buy the same Print as thousands of others when you can get Original art for this low?

Visit often as when art is sold it is taken straight off the wall and replaced with a new piece.
Father/Daughter is a show of contrasts and is the first solo show featuring the work of Robert Schmitt, the father. At 87 he paints with a youthful exuberance of unexpected colour and subject. Born in 1929 he has been in Vancouver since 1970 except for 8 years when he lived aboard his sailboat Ichiban, in the Mediterranean. He has painted since the late 1950’s but it was in France that he became an admirer of the Pointillist and Luminist styes of Cross, Luce, and Signac among others. As with most artists, his painting style as well as his medium of choice has evolved over time. Presently he works only in oil on canvas or board and his subjects include landscapes, still life and the human figure.

Roberta Beck, the daughter, is a long time Port Moody artist though she has only been painting for 40 years, compared to his 55. Growing up with an artist for a father meant she had early exposure to different ways of viewing the world and the art in it. But as with all children she rebelled and fell in love with the impressionist movement. Her work is in acrylic and tries to capture the flow of mood and movement.

Olga demonstrated three different under paintings. Seeing someone else do this is interesting, not only do you learn from the technique but is fun to discover with them the picture emerging. She said one off-hand thing that I loved, it was about the flow of the eye over a painting. She didn't say it but I immediately thought, e-motion.Roberta Beckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11449834720209642487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6246852542010291276.post-21098202810308573652014-09-29T14:40:00.001-07:002015-01-26T14:06:33.176-08:00Yellow Beach House 18x36" Acrylic on Canvas $390

Lalita Hamill and Michael King created a terrific hands on course. We stayed at Wisteria Acres a beautiful home in a park setting. With only 8 beds the group was small though during the day there were upwards of 20 more artists joining us on our excursions.
Some highlights:
Painting in the great outdoors is FUN but material management is critical. The first day I was ready to through myself and my "art" into the pond. Sticky, mucky brushes, a dried up pallet and an irritable artist (me).

How many greens can you make using 2 colours? a forest!

Standing and painting for 6 hours is hard work.

On the Canal du Midi there are numerous views as this and I painted it as I think Seurat would love. I think his "Farm Workers" could be seen in the field beyond the canal.
A short list of some of my events.

Kaboom! this was the first year of a kind of free-form showcase of local artists. I participated in the big screen presentation where my art was displayed and am now part of the brochure. It's not often that artists are celebrated in this way and so thank you Kaboom!

The Art of Being Together
This is a fundraiser for the L'Arche Society and was beautifully done. Artists were asked to submit work to the show (and sale) and then were themselves invited to the Gala.

Art To Go
A one-day art sale. This was a great opportunity for all the artists and while it was a long day it was very rewarding.

Classes and Workshops
Transfer Techniques with Lori Bagneres
Powdered Graphite Demo with Lalitta Hamill
Printmaking with Heather Aston

next is the Plein Air Challenge in May and a 4 day retreat in July with Lalitta Hamill

On a trip to Kyoto I saw these three modern women dressed in kimono. I
was struck by the way their obi, the elaborately tied belt, was echoed
in the shape of the path on which they stood. The obi became the focus
as it bound them in friendship and tied them to tradition.
My favourite flower. The ones in my garden are an incredible deep blue and smell of blueberries.
While I didn't think about it at the time, the sky has a Cezanne feel and the flowers are more Monet.Roberta Beckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11449834720209642487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6246852542010291276.post-35693197945134933352013-02-28T11:49:00.004-08:002015-10-22T14:54:07.524-07:00Bride 18x24" Acrylic on Canvas $290

This is painting that has been in my mind for over 10 years. The idea of a bride moving toward Love and Home in a drift of lace and flowers. Carley, the beautiful bride made this vision a reality. I feel that portraits should capture the distinctive features and movements of the subject. When I paint portraits it is after many filmed interviews during which I come to understand and sense the uniqueness of the individual. In this case, the blank frames in the background reveal that Robert is an artist. His hand moves in thought and the ring on his third finger drifts on frail hands. It is the view I imagine in meditation, when I am seriously upset and when I am joyously happy. This painting is the epitome of my concept of art-e-motion, the movement in the water moves, calms and yet intrigues me.
Now for the weird part. This painting is an odd shape because I painted it to cover the big black gaping hole that is the TV screen that hangs on our wall.
It was March, and even in the early afternoon Paris is dark enough that the Eiffel Tower is glowing.
